Lapping aluminum scope rings.
Slowly screw down the top scope rings to provide extra pressure on the scope lapping tool.
Aluminum is anodized and lapping them makes them softer by removing the hard anodized outer layer.
The base and rings are assembled on a steel lapping bar the abrasive compound silicon carbide aluminum oxide or alumina and boron carbide being commonly used is coated on the bar.
When lapping separate scope rings i set them as far apart on the mounting rail as possible in order to provide the maximum lapping rod movement covered later.
Place the scope lapping tool onto the rings and screw down the two top scope rings gently.
Screw the ring tops on but don t tighten the screws too snug.
So how is it done.
After 15 minutes of gentle action remove the two top scope rings and check.
Work the lap in zigzags through the rings and in figure 8s or ovals as the surfaces smooth up and the lap moves more easily.
The purpose for lapping the rings is to reduce any side loading flex on the scope.
You can also improve the same area by having larger diameter scope bodies or thicker scope bodies.

Uncoated steel especially stainless is a different matter.
A lapping compound which is basically an abrasive liquid or paste is applied to the bar.
The rings are tightened to the point where the bar can move but with slight resistance and the bar is worked back and forth.

But had i put the scope in those rings without reaming and lapping i would have probably ruined the scope.
